Here's what we were working with - a fully carpeted staircase that was outdated and no longer up to code. The old stairs had to go. So we tore them out completely, right down to the stringers, and started fresh. That's not the easy route, but it's the right one when safety and longevity are the goal.

Once the old structure was out, we rebuilt the stair frame from scratch - properly sized, level, and built to meet current code requirements. From there, we moved into the finish carpentry phase. Each tread and riser was fitted in solid red oak, with clean bullnose edges and tight joints throughout. The craftsmanship at the base of the staircase, where the profile wraps and the detail work comes together, is the kind of thing that separates a real carpenter from someone just following a template.

We work in stages on jobs like this so nothing gets rushed. The oak was set and secured before any stain touched the wood. Next up for this job is stain and a protective sealer coat to lock in the finish, followed by new metal railings. Each phase builds on the last. That's how you end up with a result that holds up for years - not just looks good in photos.

Stairs take more abuse than almost any other part of a home. They flex, they creak, they wear down. When they also fall out of code compliance, that's when it stops being just an aesthetic problem. A full rebuild like this one in South Windsor solves all of it at once - structure, safety, and finish - rather than patching over something that was never built right to begin with.

This is the kind of work we do every day across Connecticut. If your stairs are creaky, worn, or just plain overdue for a proper rebuild, this is what the process looks like from demo to done.
